Heartworm Crisis in Illinois Shelters

ACT NOW—WE ARE LOSING TIME AND LIVES!

 Treatment medication and veterinary services

 urgently needed.

Illinois Animal Rescue, Inc. is a licensed 501(c)(3), non-profit and no-kill rescue organization dedicated to providing rescue, transport and humane care to the animals in our communities throughout Illinois and the surrounding states. We are an all-volunteer organization comprised of individuals, rescuers, transporters, humane investigators, a coalition of humane societies, and many others—all coming together and committing our time, services, and limited resources to end suffering and save lives. Over the years, volunteers have rescued thousands of animals: in 2007 alone, over 6,000 precious lives were saved from abandonment, neglect, abuse, and unnecessary euthanasia.

NOW WE FACE A NEW CRISIS AND NEED YOUR HELP. This spring we have been finding that almost 100% of adult dogs pulled from some shelters are testing positive for heartworm. As such, most no-kill facilities are unable to accept these dogs, and we are unable to transport these sick (but treatable) animals from high-kill facilities to no-kill facilities in the Chicago area to give them the chance for safety and forever homes that they deserve.

We urgently need heartworm treatments—Immiticide®, Ivermectin, and heartworm preventive—and veterinary personnel to administer the treatments. If you can provide medication, sponsorship or deliver direct veterinary services, please contact us. Monetary contributions are also appreciated and will help purchase supplies and services (the minimum cost of a heartworm treatment is $300 per dog).
